Cabinet Reshuffle: Harsh Vardhan, Ramesh Pokhriyal, Babul Supriyo Resign as Ministers; Several Others Dropped

New Delhi: Ahead of the mega Cabinet expansion of the Modi government, several ministers have been asked to resign from the Union Cabinet. Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Health Minister are among some big names that have resigned from the Union Cabinet. The details emerged after the meeting on Cabinet reshuffle held at PM Modi’s official residence concluded in the afternoon. The Union cabinet reshuffle is scheduled to start at 6 in the evening

Dr Harsh Vardhan, who served as Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Minister of Science and Technology, and Minister of Earth Sciences, has resigned from the Union Cabinet. Reports said Harsh Vardhan was removed as the Union Health Minister due to his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has also resigned from the Union Cabinet. Reports said Pokhriyal is being dropped as has expressed his unwillingness to continue in the Cabinet due to post-COVID impact on his health

antosh Gangwar has resigned as the Labour Minister from his post this morning. Gangwar held the position of Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Labour and Employment. He, however, said he is not aware of what his new role in the government will be.

Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Babul Supriyo and Minister of State for Health Ashwini Chaube have also been asked to quit.

In a Facebook post, Babul Supriyo said, “Yes, when there is smoke there must be a fire somewhere Yes, I have been asked to resign & I have!!. I thank Honourable Prime Minister for giving me the privilege to serve my country as a Member of his Council of Ministers.”

West Bengal MP Deboshree Chaudhary, who served as MoS Women and Child Development, has been asked to resign from the Cabinet as well, sources said.

DV Sadananda Gowda, who served as the Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers, has been also asked to resign from the Cabinet.

Reports said the ministers have dropped after their performance was reviewed.

This was followed by the resignation of MoS Jal Shakti Rattan Lal Kataria.

Sanjay Dhotre, Minister of State for Education, Communications, Electronics and IT, will also likely be dropped from Cabinet.

This will be the first reshuffle in the Council of Ministers by Prime Minister Narendra Modi since he assumed charge for a second term in May 2019.

The Prime Minister is expected to bring in young faces and give representation to various social groups and regions in the reshuffle.
