Women’s Premier League: WPL Set To Kick Off With Mumbai Vs Ahmedabad Clash

The first match of WPL will be played on 4 March between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, according to a media report.

New Delhi: The inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2023) is set to kick off with a mouth-watering clash between Team Mumbai, owned by Reliance-backed IndiaWin Sports and Adani Group’s Ahmedabad, according to a report in Cricbuzz. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to make an official statement on the recent development but reports suggest that the first match of the season will be played on Saturday, March 4, 2023.

The other three franchises in the tournament are Capri Global, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals and the auction is likely to take place in Mumbai after the final of SA20 and ILT20 scheduled to take place on February 11 and 12, 2023. There are as many as four franchises in these leagues that are also directly involved in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and the BCCI will have to ensure that they are available for the auction – which can only happen after the completion of the tournament.

The inaugural edition will have 22 matches to begin with and Mumbai is likely to pip other cities as the venue of the tournament. The Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium has already been shortlisted, according to several reports in the media with the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune being picked as the back up option for the entire length of the tournament.
