Indian Railways: How to transfer your confirmed train ticket to a family member

If an individual possesses a confirmed train ticket but is unable to embark on the journey for a valid reason, they now have the option to transfer the ticket to a family member, thereby saving the money spent on the ticket. It is crucial to note that the ticket transfer is restricted exclusively to immediate family members, including father, mother, sister, brother, daughter, son, husband, or wife.

To avail of this service, passengers are required to submit a request at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled train departure. It is important to highlight that ticket transfers can only be utilized once per person. If an individual has already transferred a ticket to someone, they are not eligible to get the service a second time.

  • Take a printout of the ticket.
  • Carry the Aadhar Card or Voter ID card of the person to whom you wish to transfer the ticket.
  • Head to the reservation counter at your nearest railway station.
  • Apply for the ticket transfer.       


As per the guidelines of Indian Railways, the timeframe for raising a ticket transfer request may vary based on the circumstances and the passenger involved.

For government employees, it is mandatory to raise the request at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the train. In the case of festive occasions, wedding ceremonies, or personal matters, individuals are required to raise the ticket transfer request 48 hours prior to the train’s departure. Additionally, NCC candidates are eligible to avail themselves of the ticket transfer service and its associated benefits.
