Motorola G8 to get modern design in 2020 but run on old 2019 chipset, G8 Power also in works

Motorola had an interesting year in 2019, comprising of several interesting phones and eventually ending the year with the stunning Razr foldable phone. This year, the Lenovo-owned brand aims to compete in the premiums segments with more phones but it will still continue to churn out affordable phones as always.

Rumours have so far suggested that two new additions to the Moto G8 series will come in 2020 and prior to the MWC, it seems that the new G8 models will debut at the tech expo.

After last year’s G8 Plus, Motorola is working on the regular G8 and a battery powerhouse version called the G8 Power. Both these phones are supposed to sit under the G8 Plus and that means these will target the affordable segments. The renders have shown that the G8 will get a new design similar to the Motorola One Vision and One Action but it will use existing specs from Motorola’s parts bin.

A set of renders revealed by 91Mobiles suggest that the G8 will finally lose the notch design and go for more modern punch-hole cutout design for the selfie camera. The phone will have narrow bezel displays with a thick chin. However, the phone will lose the bulky notch and instead have a single punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera.

At the back, the design looks similar to the Motorola G8 Plus, with a Huawei P20-inspired triple camera setup. The LED flash sits towards the centre of the body while the fingerprint sensor flaunts the stylish Motorola batwing logo.

In another leak from XDA Developers, both specifications of the G8 and G8 Power have been revealed. The regular G8 and the G8 Power will use a Snapdragon 665 chipset which will be paired with several RAM and storage options. The G8 will come with options to choose from 2GB/3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB storage. The G8 Power will come as standard with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.

Both the phones will get 6.3-inch LCD screens but the G8 will get a 720p display whereas the G8 Power will get a 1080p display. The standard G8 will get a triple camera setup with a 16-megapixel main camera that’s accompanied by an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 2-megapixel macro camera. The G8 Power gets the same rear cameras but adds another 8-megapixel camera of an unknown time. The G8 has to make do with an 8-megapixel camera whereas the G8 Power gets a 25-megapixel camera.

The Power moniker in the G8 Power means this variant will get a massive 5000mAh battery with support or 18W fast charging. The regular G8 will only get a 4000mAh battery with 10W fast charging. Both the phones will launch with Android 10.

As of now, there’s no information as to whether the G8 and G8 Power will come to India. Given that G8 Plus already launched last year, the Motorola G8 Power has the chance to succeed the G8 Plus and given the specifications, it could challenge the likes of Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 8 Pro.
