24 arrested for attack on junior doctor in Assam’s Hojai

Twenty four people have been arrested in connection with the attack on a doctor at a Covid care centre in Assam’s Hojai district.

The Assam Police has arrested 24 people in connection with the attack on a junior doctor at a Covid care centre in the Hojai district.

According to reports, family members of a deceased patient brutally thrashed a young doctor following the patient’s demise at Odali Model Hospital around 1:30 pm on Tuesday.

Now, 24 accused have been arrested for attacking the doctor, said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet.

“Twenty four culprits involved in this barbaric attack have been arrested and chargesheet will be filed at the earliest. I am personally monitoring this investigation and I promise that justice will be served [sic], Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

A young doctor was brutally beaten by a mob and relatives of a Covid-19 patient after the patient died had at Odali Covid-19 care centre in the Hojai district of Assam.

According to reports, after a Covid-19 patient died at the centre, the relatives of the deceased patient brutally beaten the doctor identified as Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati.

A video of the incident also went viral on social media where some people were seen attacking the young doctor and kicking him.

According to reports, Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati had reached Odali Model Hospital for his Covid-19 duty around 1:30 pm on Tuesday.

“The relatives of the patient complained that the patient’s condition was serious. When I saw the patient, I found that he had already died. The relatives then immediately vandalised the furniture at the hospital and attacked me,” Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati said.

Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Dr Numal Momin told Aajtak/India Today TV that it was Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati’s first day on duty in a rural area after he had completed his MBBS course.

Taking note of the incident, Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Brutality against a doctor post MBBS , rural posting is highly condemable . I demand an impartial inquiry and Strict action against those culprit.”

Himanta Biswa Sarma also said that such barbaric attacks on frontline workers won’t be tolerated.

“Such barbaric attacks on our frontline workers won’t be tolerated by our administration. @gpsinghassam @assampolice Ensure that the culprits brought to justice,” he tweeted.

IMA ASSAM CONDEMNS BARBARIC ASSAULT

The Assam State branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) condemned the “barbaric assault” on Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati, who works at one of the Covid Care Centres in Hojai district.

In a press statement, IMA Assam state branch said, “The IMA and all the doctors are at a loss at this gruesome reward to a frontline worker in Covid duty.”

Following the incident, the IMA demanded immediate arrest of all the culprits and asked them to book them under all stringent laws.

The IMA cautioned the government that the medical fraternity is finding it extremely difficult to control emotions at this hour of a public health emergency.
