NCERT Books: Northeast students demand inclusion of a chapter on the region

NCERT books or curriculum has fewer contents on the northeast region, its culture and people. Considering this, Students and academicians have bombarded the social media with their appeal to include a chapter.

National Council of Educational Research and Training, NCERT books or curriculum has fewer contents on the northeast region. Taking this into consideration, many students have started a Twitter campaign demanding a mandatory chapter in the NCERT curriculum.

Students, academicians and others from northeastern States have bombarded the social media with their appeal to include a chapter on the northeast in NCERT Books. The campaign was live yesterday on Twitter with ‘AchapterforNE’ and ‘NortheastMatters’ hashtags from 6-8 pm.

According to the people who are protesting, the history of the northeast and its people has vanished. The campaign aimed to push the National Council of Educational Research and Training to include a comprehensive chapter on the Northeast in NCERT Books. More than 25 North East students’ organizations lent their support to the campaign.

Speaking to the news agency, ANI, Lingdam Kame, president of All Arunachal Student Union of Chandigarh, said, “We will be able to share our history and demography if a chapter is included in the NCERT books.” The campaign later sparked a furore in Arunachal Pradesh and other parts of the country.

Earlier in 2017, a bill in the Lok Sabha was introduced on the inclusion of the culture and history of the northeastern people in the school curriculum. Things have not progressed so far. Also, a similar demand for a chapter in NCERT books was raised in 2014. So, it is expected that the government might consider this and include a chapter on the northeast region in NCERT books.
