Assam: Narcotics worth Rs 10 crore seized, one arrested

GUWAHATI: Assam Police on Thursday recovered a huge quantity of drugs and psychotropic substances worth Rs 10 crore in the international market in western Assam’s Goalpara district. One Jahangir Alom from Bhalukdubi in the district has been arrested in this connection.

He has been charged under relevant Sections of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). Giving this information, Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said the drugs were hidden in an underground room. “The accused person’s house also had a mini factory where he made Codeine-based cough syrups. Police recovered three machines for labeling and sealing and nine drums (4,000 litres) of raw material to prepare cough syrup. This besides, heroin, tables such as Yaba, Nitrozepam, Spasmo were also recovered from the house along with cash,” he added.
The DGP said police also seized an excavator vehicle, a Bolero pickup van, a Maruti Alto vehicle and an electric rickshaw from Alom’s residence.
On June 21 night, police in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district arrested two Tamil women and a Manipuri man along with around three kilograms of contraband drugs worth Rs 12 crore in international market.
The arrested women were identified as Lashmi D and Panjabhiram while the man was identified as Khoiram Basanta Singha.
