Sreedharan Pillai takes oath as Governor of Goa, says modern and scientific revamping of education required

B S Koshyari had been holding the additional charge as the governor of Goa since August 2020 after the transfer of Satya Pal Malik from the post.

P S Sreedharan Pillai was on Thursday sworn in as the Governor of Goa at the Raj Bhavan in Dona Paula. Pillai, who took charge of the gubernatorial office months ahead of legislative assembly polls, said that he would be an ‘umpire’ in the poll-bound state.

Pillai was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Dipankar Datta at a ceremony attended by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Union Minister of State Shripad Naik, several ministers and MLAs.

Speaking on the day-long fast observed by Arif Mohammed Khan, the governor of his home state Kerala, to create awareness against dowry, Pillai said he too will be committed to social causes.

“The Governor (of Kerala) held a fast against some social evils. If through self-sacrifice, we can change the people of this country, my personal view is (there is) nothing wrong in that,” said Pillai.

He, however, said governors are not expected to take political stands one way or another.

Pillai said that a modern and scientific revamping of education is also required.

Pillai, served as the Governor of Mizoram before he was named the Governor of Goa. Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari held additional charge before Pillai’s appointment.
