Defence ministry to publish details of procurement on website to promote ‘ease of doing business’

The defence ministry has approved a proposal to publish details of procurement on its website in order to promote ‘ease of doing business’.

In order to promote transparency in the capital acquisition process and facilitate ‘ease of doing business’ in the defence sector, the Ministry of Defence has decided to publish relevant details of planned procurements on its website.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh has approved a proposal mandating that service headquarters publish the relevant details on the service headquarters or Ministry of Defence website within one week of the receipt of approvals, the defence ministry said in a statement.

The details shared will be subject to sensitivities keeping the security of the nation in mind.

The defence industry has regularly pitched for greater access to details of procurements planned by the Ministry of Defence, especially with regard to cost, quantity, offsets, trials and transfer of technology which is being envisaged at the acceptance of necessity (AoN) stage.

This is an important step towards greater transparency and information symmetry and will provide an opportunity to additional vendors, who did not respond to the request for information but wish to express their interest and submission of bid, the defence ministry said.

This timely visibility will enable the industry to plan technology tie-ups with original equipment manufacturers, initiate the process to set up production lines and augment production capacity in anticipation of the orders likely to be placed, as per the ministry.
