First-time tax filers need to register on income tax portal for filing ITR. Here’s how to do it

If you are filing your ITR for the first time, then you will have to first register yourself on the new tax filing portal to file your return.

New Delhi: In order to file your income tax return (ITR) online using the newly launched income tax filing website you must have an account with the portal. Also, if you are filing your ITR for the first time, then you will have to first register yourself on the new tax filing portal to file your return. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to register yourself on the new tax filing portal.

For registering yourself on the new tax filing website you need to have a valid and active PAN, a working mobile number and an email id. Once you have these details you can go ahead with the following steps to register yourself.

Step 1: Visit new income tax portal: www.incometax.gov.in

Step 2: On the new portal, click on ‘Register’

Step 3: Select ‘Taxpayer’ as your category. Enter your PAN and click on validate. If your PAN is already registered or inactive, then you will get an error message for the same. You will be required to confirm if you want to register as an ‘Individual taxpayer’. Once the PAN is successfully validated, click on ‘Continue’

Step 4: Now you need to enter basic details such as last name, first name, middle name, date of birth, gender and residential status (Resident/Non-resident). Once these details are filled, click on ‘Continue’

Step 5: In this step, you will be required to provide your contact details, i.e., primary mobile number and primary email ID. You will also be required to select if the primary mobile number and email address belongs to you or someone else. You will also be required to enter your communication address.

Step 6: Separate one-time passwords (OTPs) will be sent to your mobile number and email ID. these OTPs will remain valid for 15 minutes only. So enter them as first as possible and click on ‘Continue’.

Step 7: You will be required to verify all the details entered by you in the previous tabs. In case there is any error in the details mentioned by you, you will the get the option to edit those details it in the last step. Once the details are verified, click on ‘Confirm’.

Step 8: Enter a desired password and re-enter the same for confirming the password. Worth mentioning here is that the password should be between 8 and 14 characters; should be a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters; should have atleast one number and one special character.

Further, you need to enter a personalised message up to 25 characters. This message will be shown to you every time you login to your account on the new income tax portal. This will ensure that you are logging in to the genuine website and not on a fake website.
