From Delhi to Haryana to UP, full list of states where schools are closed amid fears over Omicron

Owing to the rise in Omicron cases across India, several state governments have shut down the schools conducting classes in physical mode. Scroll down to check complete list

New Delhi | Jagran Education Desk: The vaccination drive for children in the age group of 15 to 18 years old has begun today, January 3 and so far 7 lakh beneficiaries have registered themselves on the CoWIN portal. However, to keep the children safe amid the surge in Omicron cases, several states have once again shut down the schools, colleges and other educational institutions in physical mode. The aim behind shutting down schools is to curb the outspread of the deadly virus. In some states, winter vacations have been announced while others are conducting classes online.

Here we have brought you the complete list of states and UTs that have announced the closure of schools.

Delhi

Delhi government has announced ‘Yellow Alert’ after the national capital witnessed a hike in Omicron cases from 2-3 per cent to 25-30 per cent in two weeks. Soon after, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) released new guidelines in which schools, colleges and other educational institutions had to be closed until further orders. Also, the government has announced winter vacations for classes 1 to 5.

Haryana

After witnessing a sharp surge in the Omicron cases, the state government announced new restrictions, including the closure of schools and colleges. As per the notice, the state government has announced winter vacation in the schools and will remain close till January 12.

Uttar Pradesh

Schools in Noida, Ghaziabad, Hapur and Greater Noida have been shut down after witnessing a surge in Omicron cases and severe cold waves. The state government has announced winter vacations in government schools up to class 8. The schools will remain close for 15 days, that is, from December 31, 2021, to January 14, 2022. However, no guidelines have been issued for private schools.

Maharashtra

State Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad has informed that schools can be closed if COVID cases surge. The official announcement of the closure of the schools has not been made yet, but it is being speculated that an update may come soon.

West Bengal

The state government has announced the closure of schools and other educational institutions from January 3 onwards owing to a rise in COVID-19 cases. “All academic activities in schools, colleges and universities shall remain closed. Only administrative activities shall be permitted with 50% of employees at a time,” the government order reads.

Rajasthan

The state government has ordered the closure of schools for classes 1-8 in Jaipur from January 3 to January 9 after witnessing a surge in the COVID-19 cases in the state capital. In other districts, the district collector has been authorised to make a decision after discussion with the additional chief secretary. 

Odisha

Classes 1 to 5 which was scheduled to reopen from January 3, 2022, has been ordered to remain shut owing to the rise in COVID-19 cases. However, physical classes for students from 6 to 10 will remain open.
