Maha Shivratri 2022: Know The Shubh Muhurat, Puja Vidhi & Significance

Maha Shivratri has special significance among Hindus. It is believed that worshipping Shiva on Shivratri is fruitful. The day of Shivratri not only has religious significance but also has scientific significance.

According to the Hindu calendar, Maha Shivratri is celebrated every year on Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi of Falgun month. Usually, there are 12-13 Shivratris in a year and Maha Shivratri is considered to be the most prominent one.

Shivratri falls on the fourteenth day of every month I.e. a day before the new moon and it is considered auspicious to worship Shiva on this day. Shivratri which falls in the month of February or March is known as Maha Shivratri.

The word Shivratri is an amalgamation of two words, Shiva and Ratri. Here shiva means ‘Lord Shiva’ and Ratri means ‘night’. Thus, Shivratri means the night of Lord Shiva. On this day, devotees worship Lord Shiva and perform various religious rituals to please Lord Shiva. Date & Time Of Worship

  • This year the auspicious day of Maha Shivratri will start from 3:16 am on Tuesday, March 1.
  • The date of Shivratri will end on the second day i.e. Chaturdashi Tithi, Wednesday, March 2 at 10 am.
  • Phase 1 worship: March 1, Tuesday, from 6:21 pm to 9:27 pm
  • Phase 2 worship: March 1 from 9:27 pm to 12:33 pm
  • Phase 3 worship: March 2 from 12:33 pm to 3:39 pm
  • Phase 4 worship: March 2, from 3:39 am to 6:45 am

Significance

According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati took place on Maha Shivratri. Therefore, fasting on this day is considered to be fruitful. Therefore, people fast on this for a healthy marriage.

Dr. Aarti Dahiya also tells us that if unmarried girls worship Lord Shiva on the day of Shivratri, then they will find a groom of their choice. On this day, offer milk and Belpatra to Lord Shiva. Some people also perform Rudra abhishek of Lord Shiva on this day. It is believed that doing Rudra abhishek on the day of Maha Shivratri brings happiness and wealth to the house and fulfils all the wishes. It is also believed that worshipping Lord Shiva on this day gets rid of all the troubles and obstacles of life. On this day, the person who worships Lord Shiva with a sincere heart along with Maa Parvati gets freedom from all his sins.

  • People who want to observe a fast on this day should start their fast from Trayodashi date itself.
  • One day before this fast, give up tamasic food.
  • This fast starts on the day of Chaturdashi, therefore, wake up early in the morning and wear clean clothes after taking a bath.
  • Although it is especially fruitful to go to a temple, if you are unable to do so, then worship at home itself.
  • The fast starts from the day of Chaturdashi and the fast is observed for the whole day.
  • According to Hindu scriptures, people four times on Maha Shivratri.
  • These four times are also known as Char time zones and worshipping during these time zones frees will free you from all your sins.
  • It is considered mandatory to worship Lord Shiva during the night.
  • This fast is broken after sunrise before the end of Chaturdashi tithi on the next day.
  • You can get Rudra abhishek done on this day and you should surely recite Shiva Chalisa.

Special Way To Worship Lord Shiva

It is considered good to visit the temple on the day of Maha Shivratri. If you can go to the temple, then offer milk, fruits, belpatra, dhatura, dhatura, etc. to the Shivling. While offering bel leaves, it should be kept in mind that no Bel leaves should be broken.

You can also offer sandalwood leaves by writing Om Namah Shivaya or just Om. If this is not possible, then worship Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati by offering Akshat, betel leaves, betel nuts, roli, mauli thread, sandalwood, clove, cardamom, milk, curd, honey, ghee, dhatura, belpatra, kamalgatta and fruits at home. In the end, perform the aarti of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. On this day, chanting Om Namah Shivaya or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is fruitful.

In this way, worshipping Lord Shiva and chanting the Shiva mantra on this day with a sincere heart is considered fruitful. Also, you should observe a fast on this day.
