The broader Nifty50 dropped 0.4% to end below 17,250, while the Sensex shed more than 300 points to close aboe 57,600. Outperforming benchmarks, Nifty midcap settled with over 0.5% gains Auto, banking and realty stocks declined the most, while some buying interest was seen in metal, pharma and oi & gas sectors.
Asian markets were trading negative in Thursday’s early trade as Japanese Nikkei corrected more than 1%, Hang Seng Index at the Hong Kong exchange was trading lower by 0.4% and Chinese Shanghai Composite dragged nearly 0.5%.
Meanwhile, Russia plans to reopen its stock market for limited trading on Thursday, nearly one month after shares plunged and the exchange was shut down following the invasion of Ukraine.
There will be heavy restrictions on trading intended to prevent the kind of massive selloff that took place on February 24 in anticipation of crushing financial and economic sanctions from Western nations.
Earlier, major U.S. equities indices declined more than 1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 448.96 points, or 1.29%, to 34,358.5; the S&P 500 lost 55.41 points, or 1.23%, to 4,456.2; and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 186.21 points, or 1.32%, to 13,922.60.
