Read, act, learn: Nipun Mission for 6 lakh students from today in Haryana

GURUGRAM: Starting Monday, government schools in the state will roll out the Foundational Learning and Numeracy (FLN) campaign under the Nipun (National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy) Haryana mission for over 6 lakh students of classes I to III.
The three-month-long campaign will aim to develop knowledge of basic literacy among the students through interactive and participatory activities.
Issuing a notification earlier this week, the directorate of schools education asked all district project coordinators to start the reading campaign and education of basic numeracy and skills from Monday, based on the module prepared by the education department.
The department has released the module and learning resources for the first month of the campaign.
While Nipun Bharat covers two subjects under its FLN campaign, Haryana has included English apart from Hindi and maths. “Nipun Bharat is a central scheme under the aegis of the Samagra Shiksha project. It aims to develop foundational learning skills in Hindi and maths by 2026-27. We have taken this project a step ahead by adding one more subject-English-and committing to achieving the FLN skills by 2025. The programme will be rolled out at the block level and teachers have already been trained for that,” said an official in the primary school education department.
The department claims that about 37,000 teachers have already been trained for this project in batches of 40 at every block. During the campaign, teachers will shun the use of textbooks and use different audio-visual modes and participatory activities for teaching.
While for class I students, teachers will follow Vidya Pravesh – a three-month play-based school preparation module, a reading campaign will be held during this time for students of classes II and III.
Talking about the two modules, the nominated district coordinator, Manoj Lakra, said both the modules have been derived from the NE recommendations. “It has been developed by the NCERT and adopted by the SCERT. Vidya Pravesh is a 12-week-long school integration programme that prepares the students coming from diverse backgrounds to develop an aptitude for learning,” he noted.
For classes II and III, a special reading campaign will be held in the first four weeks of this mission. The education department has noted that the survey carried out to assess the learning gap in the children highlighted that students in the primary section have forgotten the ability to recognise words, read, and comprehend the context of the written texts.
