Tech Tips: How to transfer your WhatsApp data from Android to iOS or vice versa

Getting a new smartphone is always tempting. You go to the store and buy a new gadget and get our hands on the latest tech and features. Even data transferring from your old device to a new is seamless if your old and new smartphone run on the same OS. But things get a slightly confusing if you move from Android to iOS or vice versa. Especially when you want to transfer all your WhatsApp data. Well, the process is tad lengthy, but not complicated.

If you’re moving from an Android phone to an iPhone, you can easily transfer your WhatsApp account information, profile photo, individual chats, group chats, chat history, media, and settings. But you can’t transfer your call history or display name. Here is a step-by-step guide to transfer your WhatsApp from Android to iOS or iOS to Android.

How to transfer WhatsApp data from Android to iOS

Android users can use the ‘Move to iOS’ application to transfer their WhatsApp data from an existing android device to their new iOS device. However, WhatsApp’s payment & call history data won’t get transferred. Readers must note that the WhatsApp data transfer will only work if the phone is not setup. If it already has data, make sure to reset it before.

  • Install Apple’s ‘Move to iOS’ application on your android device.
  • Open the ‘Move to iOS’ application on Android and follow the instructions.
  • The iPhone will display a code, enter the code on the Android device when prompted.
  • Select ‘WhatsApp’ on the Transfer Data Screen and tap Start. WhatsApp will prepare data for the export and sign out once completed.
  • Return to the ‘Move to iOS’ application and tap on ‘Continue’ to transfer data to the iPhone.
  • Once the data transfer is complete, install the latest WhatsApp on your iPhone.
  • Login with the same mobile phone number and tap Start when displayed.
  • Once the process is completed, WhatsApp chats will be visible on the new iPhone.

How to transfer WhatsApp data from iOS to Android

Meta has also launched support to transfer data from iOS to Android, which is helpful for people switching from iPhone to new Android devices. Your new Android smartphone should be Android 12 or above. Also, your android device must be either new or factory reset.

  • Connect your iPhone to your Android device using USB Type-C to Lightning cable.
  • Follow the instructions to import all selected data from iPhone to Android device.
  • Tap Continue and scan the QR code displayed on the Android device by your iPhone.
  • Set-up WhatsApp on the android device and WhatsApp chats will be visible
