In order to insure passengers from mishaps/ accidents, Indian Railway has given an option of insurance coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh through online train bookings via its e-ticketing arm IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation).

Indian Railways: How to select the option of insurance

Step 1: Visit the official to make an online reservation –  irctc.co.in.

Step 2: While booking a ticket, you have to select the option of travel insurance.

Step 3: Pay the amount for travel  

Step 4: Submit the button.

 These steps will be similar while making a reservation through offline mode, you have to go to the ticket window of the railway station and chose the option of travel insurance.

Indian Railways: How railways pay money

While you are booking the ticket through the railway website, app, or other online platforms, you will get an option called Traveling Insurance. For this, you have to pay a charge of only 1 rupee. 
Through this facility, Indian Railways Travel Insurance gives you financial help for physical damage caused by any accident during the journey.  

Travel insurance is provided by the Railways in collaboration with SBI General Insurance Corporation Limited and Liberty General Insurance Limited.

With travel insurance, passengers will get financial assistance of up to 10 lakh. The victim’s family shall be applicable for this amount in case of death due to a train accident. 

Besides, if a person becomes completely disabled in an accident, then the railways pay him Rs 10 lakh. Similarly, Indian Railways pays Rs 7,50,000 for partial disability. 

A person seriously injured in the accident gets Rs 2,00,000 and in case of mild injury, Rs 10,000 are given by the railways for treatment of the injured.
