Tech tips: How to send money through UPI without using internet

Initiating UPI transaction but facing network issues? Well most of us nowadays carry less to no cash and are only dependent on UPI payments for money transfers. But doing transactions using the internet often lands us in an awkward situation due to slow or 2G network reception, halting the UPI process online. However, there is an offline process to initiate UPI payments which not many of us are aware of. All you have to do is dial USSD code  ‘*99#’ from your phone. 

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) started the ‘*99# service’ to process UPI services across banks in India. Users can avail the banking services  by dialling *99# through their registered mobile number and transacting money through an interactive menu displayed on the mobile screen.

NPCI offers various services under *99# service include, Sending and Receiving interbank account to account funds, balance enquiry, setting / changing UPI PIN besides host of other services. Here is a step-by-step process to initiate UPI transaction using  ‘*99#’ USSD code from your smartphone.

How to transfer money from UPI offline

Step 1: Dial *99# from your registered mobile number which is linked to your bank account.

Step 2: A menu will be popped up with available facilities to initiate from your bank. 

  1. Send Money 
  2. Request Money 
  3. Check Balance 
  4. My Profile
  5. Pending Request 
  6. Transactions
  7. UPI Pin

Step 3: To send money type 1. And tap on send.

Step 4: Now select from which account you want to send money eg. Mobile Number, UPI ID, Saved Beneficiary and other. Type the number of the option and tap send. 

Step 5: If you have selected transfer via mobile number, enter the mobile number linked to the UPI account of the receiver and tap send. 

Step 6: Enter the amount you want to send and tap on send.

Step 7: Now enter the remark for the payment. 

Step 8: Enter the UPI pin to complete your transaction. 

Step 9: Your UPI transaction will be completed offline. 

You can also disable UPI services offline by dialling using *99# from your registered phone number and following the instructions.
