Aadhaar-Voter ID linking: Step-by-step guide to link Aadhaar Card with Voter ID

New Delhi: India’s Election Commission of India (ECI) recently initiated a drive asking people to link their voter identity cards with Aadhaar cards. The poll body is doing so under the Election Laws (Amendment) Act, 2021, adopted by the parliament in December last year.

With this drive, the ECI aims at establishing the identity of electors and authenticate entries in the electoral roll while also checking if the same person is registered in more than one constituency or more than once in the same constituency.

While the Election Commission hasn’t mandated the linking of the two documents, the poll body has clarified that it will not omit an existing voter’s name from the electoral list if found that the Aadhaar number has not been submitted.

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju too, on Friday, noted that the linking of the two documents is completely voluntary and those who haven’t linked their voter IDs with Aadhaar will not be knocked off the electoral lists. Rijiju added that the ECI launched the programme to collect the Aadhaar number of electors from August 1, 2022, in all States and Union Territories.

He, however, underscored that there is no provision for withdrawing consent after the linking process has been done.

So, how can you link your Aadhaar card with the Voter ID card online? Here’s a look at the steps that the Election commission has shared on how to link voter ID with Aadhaar card:
