Budget 2023: PMGKAY – Free food scheme extended – expenditure of Rs 2 lakh cr from Jan 1

New Delhi: Budget 2023 -The government, on Wednesday announced that the scheme to supply free grains to poor under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY) has been extended for one year. In her Budget 2023 speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the PMGKAY scheme is being implemented at an expenditure of Rs 2 lakh crore from January 1.

The government’s integrated food security scheme was renamed Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY) in December 2022. Under the scheme, free food grains are being given to 80 crore poor people from January 1. “The government is implementing scheme to supply free grains to poor under PMGKAY with expenditure of Rs 2 lakh cr from January 1,” FM Sitharaman said in her speech.

Earlier during the day, Sitharaman said that Indian economy is expected to grow at the rate of 7 per cent. Despite challenges, the Indian economy is heading towards a bright future, Sitharaman said in her Budget 2023 speech.

She also touched upon the digital initiatives of her government and highlighted the measures taken by the government during the COVID-19 pandemic and amid global economic challenges. She added that India has moved from its spot as the 10th biggest economy to the fifth largest in the world and added that india has improved the position as a well-governed and innovative country.

“This is the first budget in Amrit Kaal, this budget hopes to build on the foundation laid in previous budget and the blueprint laid for India at 100, we envision a prosperous and inclusive India in which the fruits of development reach all,” she said.
