LIVE: Delhi Mayoral Election on Feb 22 As LG Approves Kejriwal’s Recommendation

Lt Governor VK Saxena approved Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s recommended date for the mayoral election, and the polling will be held on February 22. This comes a day after the Supreme Court ordered issuance of a notice within 24 hours for convening the first meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to fix the date of election for mayor, deputy mayor and members of the Standing Committee.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal addressed a press conference on Saturday, amid a fresh notice to Deputy CM Manish Sisodia to appear before CBI on Sunday, in light of the Delhi liquor scam. Kejriwal blamed LG VK Saxena and alleged that he tried to forcibly prevent the AAP-led state government from presenting its views before the Supreme Court. “This amounts to interference in the administration of justice,” Kejriwal said.

Also, a day after the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction of Shiv Sena lost its poll symbol by the Election Commission, meeting took place at his residence Matoshree in Mumbai’s Dadar. He interacted with his supporters, and his faction leaders like Priyanka Chaturvedi and Manisha Kayande were also seen. Posters were put up outside the residence on Saturday morning.

First up, the names of at least 900 medical teachers were missing from the electoral roll, ahead of the five-yearly polls at Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) in Mumbai. The elections are for board of studies and academic council, and are due next month.

Maharashtra State Medical Teachers’ Association claims most of the faculty from the state’s best medical colleges have been kept away from the electoral process by “omitting” their names from the rolls, a Times of India report said on Saturday. The association has requested the polls to be rescheduled until the rolls are rectified.

Meanwhile, a passenger aboard a Mumbai-Delhi flight claimed that his cabin handbag was allegedly stolen by a fellow passenger.  37-year-old web designer was arrested in the case on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Hari Garg, a resident of Jodhpur in Rajasthan.  He is a graduate and has done a web designing course in Jodhpur. He also runs a restaurant business there, police said.

The arrest was made based on a complaint by a Dehradun resident who lodged an e-FIR alleging that his bag went missing from the Mumbai-Delhi flight.

Also, a 30-year-old employee of a private bank in Delhi was arrested in Greater Noida for allegedly raping an MBBS student and pressuring her to convert to Islam from Hinduism for marriage, police here said on Friday.

The man’s 52-year-old father has was also arrested in connection with the case, the police said. The man was a resident of Sangam Vihar in Delhi
