Covid Update: 6,155 fresh coronavirus infections in India as Delhi, Mumbai among other cities see spike in numbers

Alarmed by the resurgence of Covid-19, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday chaired a meeting of health ministers of all states and Union Territories and advised them to keep all preparedness for Covid management.

India on Saturday recorded 6,155 fresh Covid-19 infections, while the number of active cases increased to 31,194, according to Union health ministry data.

India’s Covid-19 tally now stands at 4.47 crore (4,47,51,259). The death toll climbed to 5,30,954 with 11 deaths, including two reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated.

At 31,194, the active cases comprise 0.07 per cent of the total infections. The national COVID-19 recovery rate stands at 98.74 per cent, according to the health ministry website.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 5.63 per cent and the weekly positivity rate at 3.47 per cent.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,41,89,111, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent.

According to the ministry’s website, 220.66 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.

The national capital reported 733 new Covid-19 cases and two deaths in the last 24 hours with a positivity rate of 19.93 per cent, as per Delhi Health Department’s daily bulletin on Friday.

According to the bulletin, the total number of tests conducted was 3678, with a positivity rate of 19.93 per cent. A total of 4,08,09,404 Covid tests have been conducted so far.

While Maharashtra on Friday recorded 926 covid cases, the highest for this year and a sizable rise from 803 cases added to the tally a day earlier, while the death toll increased by three, a health official said.

Mumbai led with 276 new cases, a rise of 27 per cent from the previous day, while the three deaths were reported in Gondia, Kolhapur and Raigad districts, the official informed.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal while speaking to the media said that the national capital is fully prepared to handle the spread of coronavirus and added that wearing face masks has not been made mandatory as yet.

At a COVID-19 review meeting chaired by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday, it was observed that Maharashtra was among the three states with 10 or more districts having positivity rate (cases per 100 tests) of more than 10 per cent.

Alarmed by the resurgence of Covid-19, Mandaviya chaired a meeting of health ministers of all states and Union Territories and advised them to keep all preparedness for Covid management.

He urged the State Health Ministers to conduct mock drills of all hospital infrastructure on April 10 and 11, and review the health preparedness with district administrations and health officials on April 8 and 9.

Minister Mandaviya also urged the states to identify emerging hotspots by monitoring trends of ILI/SARI cases and sending sufficient samples for testing of Covid-19 and Influenza; and ramping up whole genome sequencing of positive samples.

India has been witnessing a steady increase in Covid cases with average daily cases rising to 4,188 in the week ending April 7 from 571 in the week ending March 17; and weekly positivity rate up to 3.02 per cent in the week ending April 7.
