Pixel 8 series may come with improved 50MP main sensor, more camera details leaked ahead of launch

The Google Pixel 8 series camera details have been leaked ahead of the expected launch in October. While we can expect the new Pixel 8 family, which may include Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, to feature a new Tensor G3 SoC, a big focus also appears to be on the cameras, at least in terms of hardware. The Pixel 8 may still have two cameras on the back, and the Pro model may include three sensors. However, given that there could be new hardware and Google’s brilliant image-processing tech, we can expect a decent upgrade in the photography department.

According to Android Authority citing company sources, the Pixel 8 series will include an upgraded 50-megapixel Samsung GN2 ISOCELL wide camera sensor instead of the Samsung ISOCELL GN1 sensor on the Pixel 7 series. Samsung’s ISOCELL GN2 sensor is larger and can capture 35 per cent more light. It may lead to better photos in low-light settings.

The report also highlights that the Pixel 8 Pro will include an improved ultra-wide angle camera. The phone may include a Sony IMX787 sensor for ultra-wide photos. On the other hand, the vanilla Pixel 8 will reportedly continue to carry a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera with a Sony IMX386 sensor. The report suggests that Google has made the lens slightly wider, which could provide more field-of-view (FoV).

The third camera sensor on the Pixel 8 Pro could remain the same as last year, which is a 48-megapixel Samsung GM5 camera. It may offer 5x zoom, though Google may consider improving its processing capabilities. The selfie camera on the Pixel 8 series is also said to be the same as last year, that is an 11-megapixel Samsung GM5 camera.

The report also notes that Google Pro 8 would have newer features to set the phone apart from the vanilla model. This is unlike last year, as both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro were practically the same smartphones with tweaks here and there. Firstly, the 8 Pro model may include a new 8×8 ToF VL53L8 sensor for better auto-focus capabilities. It may also help with improved bokeh effects in videos. Google is also considering adding a new camera feature to let users monitor body temperature by placing their index finger over the sensor. While the feature could be very well there, it may have no other use cases.

Google will reportedly add an MLX90632 sensor, primarily recommended for high-precision non-contact temperature measurements, including body temperature. It is not a separate camera, so do not expect thermal images. This could be a hardware gimmick to boost the hype around the Pixel 8 series.

On the processing front, the Pixel 8 may support the “Adaptive torch” feature to adjust the flash intensity based on the scene. The two phones may also include a Segmentation AWB feature to process the image by separating elements into different scenes.
