Intel layoffs continue, company fires over 100 employees to cut costs

American chipmaker Intel has laid off over a hundred employees in the US in order to cut down costs, a report by IANS reveals. The move by Intel isn’t a surprise as the company, in May, had announced that it plans to lay off people in order to cut costs after facing losses. In an email statement, as reported by USAToday earlier this year, the company had said that it is ‘working to accelerate its strategy while navigating a challenging macro-economic environment’.

“We continue to invest in areas core to our business, including our U.S.-based manufacturing operations, to ensure we are well-positioned for long-term growth,” the statement had added. However, the exact number of people impacted by the impending layoffs had not been confirmed by Intel back then.

The fresh job cuts, as per IANS, will affect people from various teams including GPU software development, system software development, product marketing, and more.

Intel India planning to sell Bengaluru office?

Coming to Intel India, in June this year, it was reported that the company was planning to sell its Bengaluru office as it will operate in a “hybrid-first” model. An Economic Times report had revealed that Intel’s 250,000 square feet office space on Old Airport Road was already a part of a bidding process. The report added that several “well-known builders” had placed bids, and the deal was expected to exceed Rs 450 crore.

The report added that Intel is planning to rent the office space from the new owners after making a deal. They might rent the space for three years, as per people familiar with the matter. Intel also confirmed this in an email to ET. A spokesperson said that they’re a company that focuses on both in-person and remote work, and they’re looking at how to use their office space better and save money. Because of this, they’re going to bring together some of their offices in Bengaluru.
