Government introduces stricter rules for SIM card sales

The government in India is making it tougher to get new SIM cards. They want to ensure that the process is safe and secure. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued two circulars to regulate SIM card usage in the country. The first directive applies to individual SIM card users, like you and me. 1. Stricter Rules for Shops

Shops that sell SIM cards will have to be more careful. They need to do a background check on the people who work there. If they don’t, they can be fined up to ?10 lakh for each shop. These rules start from October 1, 2023. Existing shops have until September 30, 2024, to meet these new requirements.

2. Telecom Companies’ Responsibility

Big telecom companies like Airtel and Jio must also check the shops that sell their SIM cards. They have to make sure the shops follow the rules. This is to keep things safe and secure.

In certain places like Assam, Kashmir, and the North East, telecom companies need to get a police check on shops before letting them sell new SIM cards. This extra step is for extra security.
