TOYOTA’S NEW 48V MILD-HYBRID TECHNOLOGY: HOW DOES IT WORK

The mild-hybrid system consists of three major components: a belt-driven electric generator that substitutes the standard alternator in the engine, a 48V battery, and a DC-DC converter. Toyota claims that this technology will provide more torque and torque assist, smoother start or stop operations, regenerative braking, and up to 10 per cent higher fuel efficiency than diesel-only powertrains.

Toyota has also reportedly stated that the new system was designed with off-roading in mind, so it will not hinder the Hilux and Fortuner’s performance or towing capabilities. A water wading depth of 700mm is also possible thanks to the carefully placed components. Toyota claims that because the components are lightweight, the system may also be installed in current powertrains, the report adds.
