Imran Khan to Face Trial in Anti-Terror Courts for May 9 Violence: CNN News18 Exclusive

Imran Khan, ex-Pakistani Prime Minister, faces a slew of legal challenges, including anti-terror court trials, following investigations into the May 9 violence

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan is set to be tried under anti-terror courts following an investigation into the violence that erupted on May 9, according to a CNN News18 exclusive. Probe agencies have concluded that Khan bears sole responsibility for the country’s unrest that spread across several cities. The probe panel’s findings have shed light on Khan’s and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party leaders’ roles in large-scale violence of May 9, which led to serious charges against the former prime minister.

The development is the latest in the pileup of legal cases against Khan, since his ouster in a no-confidence vote in Parliament in April last year. 70-year-old cricketer-turned-politician has been officially charged with criminal conspiracy, alleging his involvement in masterminding an attack on army installations and inciting people to mutiny.

The Pakistan army has taken a stern stance against all the rioters, including three PTI women activists who were rearrested on Tuesday by the authorities, after they were previously released by an anti-terrorism court.

The embattled PTI chief is facing more than 150 cases, including charges ranging from contempt of court to terrorism and inciting violence, and was given a three-year sentence on corruption charges in early August. Later that month, an Islamabad High Court suspended that sentence in what amounted to a legal win for the Khan.

On Tuesday, a Pakistani court ordered that Khan remain in custody for two more weeks as authorities investigate charges that he had revealed state secrets after his 2022 ouster. On the same day, Khan was shifted to the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi from Attock prison after the Islamabad High Court ordered authorities to relocate him to the high-security jail.
