HAPPY BIRTHDAY VIRENDER SEHWAG: Indian opening legend Virender Sehwag celebrates his 45th birthday today on October 20. The ‘Nawab of Najfgarh’ was a terrifying presence during his prime with his powerful cuts and cracking drives. He built an incredible career with his passion and fierce approach to scoring runs quickly. However, Sehwag’s journey to the top of the world is quite a humbling one.

Born to a middle-class family in Najajgarh, Sehwag grew up with the dream of becoming a cricketer like Sachin Tendulkar. Soon after the cricketer went on to score over 16,000 runs for India across all formats, etching his name into the pantheons of Indian cricket icons.

Career

Virender Sehwag made his ODI debut against Pakistan at Mohali in 1999 while also retiring from the format against Pakistan 14 years later at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata. His Test debut came against South Africa at Bloemfontein in 2001. In that match, the opener smashed 105 runs on the day in a losing effort for India. He ended his 12-year Test career at Hyderabad against Australia in 2013. Sehwag had a spotless record for India as he recorded more than 8000 runs in each of the two formats.

Records And Achievements

Alongside his illustrious career for India, Virender Sehwag managed to accumulate several records and feats over the years. His tally of 284 runs is the third-highest when it comes to most runs scored in a single day.

He is the only player in cricket history to have recorded two triple-hundreds in Test cricket while being the third fastest player to reach 7000 runs in the same format. He also has a unique record to his name that saw him take four catches as a substitute in a Test match. Sehwag is the player with the highest number of runs (219) in an innings as a captain.

Apart from his cricketing abilities, Sehwag also has a comic side to him as his wit and sense of humour are appreciated by several fans around the world. We saw a glimpse of his humour when India beat Pakistan at the World Cup by seven wickets. On platform X, Sehwag commended Indian batter Rohit Sharma in his style and flavour, “Pakistani bowlers Sharmaa rahe they, Apne Sharma ji Garmaa rahe thhey. What an innings by Rohit Sharma. One of the cleanest ball striking you will see.”

During the squad selection for the ODI World Cup Sehwag’s post on platform X once again stood out from the rest. He wrote, “Head Ek Headache Anek. A good problem to have for Bharat before the World Cup. Peaking at the right time and everyone joining the party.”

In another post on the same platform, Virender Sehwag was a little taken aback when he found out that his ODI strike rate was better than some massive cricket icons including the likes of Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara and Matthew Hayden. Of course, he had the perfect response, “Bade bade shehron mein aisa chota chota kaam hota rehta hai. Honestly, didn’t know was faster than Lara, Hayden and Ponting’s ODI SR.”

He posted on X once again when India’s Asia Cup 2023 match against Pakistan was called off due to continuous rain in Kandy. He wrote, “Baarish ke time toh Chai Pakode rakhte hain yaar. Asia Cup bhi rakh diya. #BHAvsPAK”

We also know about Sehwag’s love for the Indian version of tea called ‘chai’. He once posted about it saying, “Achhi chai aur achhi rai badi mushkil se milti hai. How many cups of tea do you usually have in a day.”
