401 Call forwarding scam on a rise: what is it and here is how you can stay safe

In a growing wave of cyber scams, fraudsters are now targeting smartphone users through a cunning call forwarding scam. These criminals pose as customer service representatives from mobile network operators or internet service providers, aiming to exploit unsuspecting individuals. Telecom operators including Reliance Jio, Airtel have warned users against the call-forwarding scam.

What is a call forwarding scam?

The call forwarding scam is a deceptive scheme where scammers impersonate customer service representatives from mobile or internet service providers. They contact smartphone users, claiming issues with their mobile internet, account security, or SIM cards. To gain trust, they propose a quick fix: dialing a specific number, like 401, which activates call forwarding to the scammer’s number. This lets them access the victim’s calls, potentially intercepting voice OTPs. The victim remains unaware, as their phone doesn’t ring. Scammers aim to steal money and sensitive information, including bank details and messaging apps. Protect yourself by avoiding code dialing, securing your phone, and not sharing sensitive information with unknown callers. Stay cautious to thwart these scams.

Scammers employ a variety of convincing pretexts, such as inquiring about mobile internet or broadband issues, claiming that the victim’s account has been compromised, or alleging problems with the SIM card. Once they have gained the target’s trust, the scammer offers a seemingly simple solution and instructs the smartphone user to dial a specific number, typically beginning with 401. What’s actually happening here is that the fraudster is initiating call forwarding to a number under their control.

By using the code 401 followed by a phone number, the scammer activates call forwarding, allowing them to divert incoming calls to their own device. This nefarious tactic gives them access to the victim’s phone number, enabling them to attempt unauthorized logins to various accounts, including messaging apps and bank accounts. The call forwarding feature also provides scammers with the ability to receive voice One-Time Passwords (OTPs) sent to the victim’s phone.

One of the key dangers of this scam is that the victim remains oblivious to call forwarding. Since all incoming calls are directed to the number specified by the scammer, the victim’s phone does not ring, making it nearly impossible to detect the fraudulent activity.

The primary objective of these call forwarding scams is financial gain. Scammers seek to steal money from victims through unauthorized access to their accounts and sensitive information. While banks employ advanced security measures to safeguard accounts, cyber attackers can exploit vulnerabilities in smartphone users’ practices, potentially accessing WhatsApp accounts and more.

How to stay safe from call forwarding scams?

–Avoid Dialing Codes or Sending SMS: Never dial codes or respond to text messages sent by unknown sources. Scammers often use these methods to activate call forwarding.

–Enhance Phone Security: Use passcodes or biometric authentication methods to secure your smartphone, preventing unauthorized access to your device.

–Guard Against Sharing Sensitive Information: Never share sensitive information, such as OTPs, with random callers claiming to be from your ISP or mobile network provider. Verify their identity before sharing any data.
