Nepal Earthquake Tragedy: Widespread devastation in Jajarkot and Rukum, PM Prachanda pushes for rapid rescue and relief

The Prime Minister has issued instructions to security agencies, urging them to promptly initiate rescue and relief operations.

A powerful earthquake struck at midnight on Friday in Nepal’s Jajarkot district killing at least a total of 128 persons. In response to the disaster, Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal, also known as ‘Prachanda,’ visited the affected area on Saturday morning, accompanied by a medical team.

A post from Nepal’s PMO on X (formerly Twitter) shared that PM Dahal expressed his deep sorrow over the human and material damage caused by the earthquake on Friday. The tweet said that in response to the situation, the Prime Minister has issued instructions to security agencies, urging them to promptly initiate rescue and relief operations.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also went on X to express shock and sadness regarding to the tragic incident.

Rescue and relief operations in Nepal

To address the crisis, all three major security agencies, including the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and the Armed Police Force, have been mobilized to engage in rescue operations.

Unfortunately, the progress of these vital rescue and relief efforts on the incident site has faced obstacles due to road blockages and damaged bridges, as noted by officials.

The officials have reported that injured individuals are currently receiving medical care at Surkhet District Hospital. Furthermore, the region experienced at least four aftershocks, each measuring over a magnitude of 4, following the initial earthquake in Jajarkot.

The impact of the earthquake was particularly devastating in Jajarkot and Rukum districts of Western Nepal, where 80 individuals lost their lives, and more than 140 sustained injuries, as reported by Nepal Television, a state-run broadcaster.

Measuring at a magnitude of 6.4, the earthquake’s epicenter was located in Lamidanda, Jajarkot district. The tremors were felt as far as Kathmandu and surrounding areas, reaching all the way to New Delhi in neighboring India.
