Weather Update: IMD predicts heavy rainfall in several southern states due to cyclone ‘Michaung’, temperature dips in Delhi – Check complete forecast

In light of Cyclone Michaung, the meteorological department has issued a warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in several places for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Sunday (December 3) that the deep depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal has finally intensified into the Cyclonic Storm Michaung. According to the predictions by the Met Office, the cyclone is expected to make landfall in the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh on December 5 while prompting rainfall in various parts of the country.

The warning for heavy showers was issued for Thiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranippettai, Thiruvannamalai, Perambalur, Kallakurichy, Vellore, Thirupattur, Dharmapuri, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Krishnagiri and Salem districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

IMD rainfall warning

  • North Coastal Tamil Nadu & Puducherry: Light to moderate rainfall across most areas with heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few places and isolated extremely heavy falls on December 4, along with isolated heavy rainfall on December 5, followed by a decrease thereafter.
  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh: Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, with extremely heavy falls at isolated locations over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on December 4-5. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over north coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 6.
  • Rayalaseema: Light to moderate rainfall in numerous locations with isolated heavy to extremely heavy falls on December 4, along with isolated heavy rainfall on December 5, followed by a decrease thereafter.
  • Telangana: Light to moderate rainfall at few places with isolated heavy rainfall is likely on December 4-5 with isolated very heavy rainfall over the same region on December 5. 
  • Odisha: Light to moderate rainfall across most areas, with isolated heavy rainfall expected over South Coastal and adjoining South Interior Odisha on December 4 and 6. On December 5, there is a likelihood of isolated very heavy rainfall in the same region.

Delhi weather update 

The national capital on Sunday registered a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 26.2 degrees Celsius, which is one notch above the season’s average, as per IMD. According to the forecast by the Met Office, Delhi is likely to experience generally cloudy sky with light rain or drizzle by mid-night, following moderate to dense fog from December 4-9.
