Weather Update: IMD issues heavy rainfall warning for several places due to Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Michaung’ – check complete forecast

The deep depression over the South Bay of Bengal has developed into Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Michaung,’ expected to strengthen further and make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh today morning, as per IMD.

Heavy rainfall and powerful winds battered the southern and eastern coastlines on Monday (December 4) as states were placed on high alert following the escalation of a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal into a severe cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’. Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in the south and Odisha in the east are bracing for flooding as the result of the powerful storm.

The deep depression over the South Bay of Bengal has developed into Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Michaung,’ expected to strengthen further and make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh today morning, as per IMD.

“SCS MICHAUNG over WC & adj SW BoB lay centered about 100km NE of Chennai and 120km SE of Nellore at 1430IST of today. To intensify gradually and move nearly northwards and cross south AP coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam close to Bapatla during forenoon of 5 Dec as SCS”, said Indian Meteorological Department in a post on ‘X’.

Rainfall, thunderstorms in Tamil Nadu 

Chennai MeT predicted moderate rainfall along with light thunderstorms and lightning in ten districts of the coastal state for Tuesday morning. “Light thunderstorm and lightning with moderate rain are very likely over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet and Vellore districts of Tamil Nadu. It is also very likely over isolated places in Tirupattur, Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Kanyakumari districts of Tamil Nadu,” the Regional Centre stated in a release.

IMD’s rainfall warnings in view of severe cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ 

  • North Coastal Tamil Nadu & Puducherry: Isolated heavy rainfall is likely at most places on December 5  with isolated extremely heavy falls at some places. 
  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh: As per the forecast, light to moderate rainfall at most places and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy falls at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam on December 5. Exceptionally heavy rainfall over north coastal and adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh today. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over north coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 6. 
  • Rayalaseema: Isolated heavy rainfall is likely at many places with isolated heavy to extremely heavy falls on December 5.
  • Telangana: Light to moderate rainfall is likely at most places with isolated heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the same region on December 5. 
  • Odisha: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy rainfall is likely over south Coastal and adjoining south Interior Odisha on December 6, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over the same region on December 5.

Delhi weather update 

According to the Met Office, mainly clear sky with moderate fog in the morning is expected in the national capital today. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 25 degrees Celsius and 11 degrees Celsius respectively.

Met Office predicts rain in Jharkhand till Dec 7

Jharkhand is expected to experience light to moderate rainfall until December 7 due to the impact of the Severe Cyclone ‘Michaung,’ as per the forecast from the Ranchi Meteorological Centre. The predictions include light rain in specific areas on Tuesday, followed by light to moderate showers anticipated on December 6 and 7.

“Partial impact of the cyclone would be witnessed in Jharkhand. There will be cloudy weather with light rainfall in southern and central parts of the state on December 5, while light to moderate rainfall may be experienced in many areas on December 6 and 7,” Abhishek Anand, in-charge of Ranchi Meteorological Centre, said.
