SA Vs IND: Mohammed Shami Ruled Out Of Tests, Deepak Chahar Withdraws From ODI Series

Bengal pacer Akash Deep has been named as a replacement for Deepak Chahar for the three-match ODI series against South Africa.

New Delhi: India pacer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the two-Test series against South Africa due to a heel injury while another fast bowler Deepak Chahar has withdrawn from the ODI series because of a family emergency, the BCCI confirmed on Saturday. Shami was included in the Test squad subject to his fitness but he was not cleared by the board’s medical team for the series.

According to the statement released by the BCCI, Chahar had informed the Board that he wouldn’t be available for the ODI series due to a medical emergency. “Mr Deepak Chahar has informed the BCCI that he will not be available for the upcoming ODI series due to a family medical emergency. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Mr Akash Deep as his replacement,” it said.

Meanwhile, the BCCI also added that Shreyas Iyer will play just the first ODI and join the Test squad after the game on December 17. Iyer will not play in the second and third ODIs and will feature in the three-day practice game.

“After the conclusion of the first ODI in Johannesburg on 17th December, Mr Shreyas Iyer will join the Test squad to prepare for the Test series. He will not be available for the second and third ODI and will take part in the inter-squad game,” the BCCI added.

Meanwhile, as reported earlier, India head coach Rahul Dravid and his support staff will not be a part of the ODI series. Instead, they will link up with the Test squad and oversee the preparations for the inter-squad game.

“Team India (Senior Men) Head Coach Mr Rahul Dravid, Batting Coach Mr Vikram Rathour, Bowling Coach Mr Paras Mhambrey and Fielding Coach Mr T. Dilip will link up with the Test squad and oversee their preparations for the inter-squad game and the Test series,” BCCI said.

“The ODI team will be assisted by India A’s Coaching Staff comprising Batting Coach Mr Sitanshu Kotak, Bowling Coach Mr Rajib Datta and Fielding Coach Mr Ajay Ratra,” it added.
