Weather Update: Delhi, Haryana brace for five days of dense fog; Rainfall likely in Tamil Nadu, Kerala – Check complete forecast here

Cold Day conditions are anticipated in parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh, with isolated pockets in East Uttar Pradesh on December 29. 

The India Meteorological Department forecasts that dense to very dense fog is expected to persist in many parts of Northwest India over the next two days, gradually improving thereafter. The Met Office also said that there is a likelihood of light isolated rainfall in Northwest and Central India from December 30, 2023, to January 2, 2024. 

According to the IMD, Cold Day conditions are anticipated in specific areas, including Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh, with isolated pockets in East Uttar Pradesh on December 29.

IMD issues dense fog warning for Delhi, Haryana

The weather department informed that the national capital can anticipate extremely dense fog over the next five days, with the minimum temperature expected to linger around seven to eight degrees Celsius. The IMD has additionally issued a dense fog warning for Delhi, Haryana, and Chandigarh during the late and early hours, extending until December 31.

The IMD issued a cautionary statement on X, forecasting dense fog in Haryana and Punjab for the upcoming five days. Uttar Pradesh is expected to encounter dense fog for the next three days, as per the predictions by the IMD.

Satellite imagery shows dense fog blanket over Northern India

The Meteorological Department yesterday unveiled INSAT (Indian National Satellite System) imagery illustrating the presence of fog across the North India region.

Over the last four days, various areas in North India, such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, experienced a substantial blanket of fog, resulting in poor visibility and contributing to traffic disruptions and accidents.

Snowfall likley in J&K, Himachal, Uttarakhand

In the wake of a recent Western Disturbance, there is a high probability of light rainfall and snowfall occurring over Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on the 30th and 31st of December 2023.

Rainfall warning issued for Tamil Nadu, other states 

Due to lower-level easterly winds originating from the Bay of Bengal, there is an expectation of light isolated rainfall over Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh from December 31, 2023, to January 2, 2024. 

Concurrently, influenced by a fresh easterly wave, there is a forecast of light to moderate isolated/scattered rainfall over south Tamil Nadu and Kerala spanning from December 31 to January 2, 2024. Furthermore, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over south Tamil Nadu on December 31, 2023, and January 1, 2024.
