India Weather Update: Delhi shivers with record-low temperature! IMD warns of prolonged cold wave in Punjab, Haryana, and UP! Full forecast here

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh will batter cold wave conditions till January 20. 2024.

People in north India will continue to witness dense fog conditions for the next 5 days. Further, cold-day to severe cold-day conditions are likely to strike the plains of the Northwest region of the country for the next few days.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh will batter cold wave conditions till January 20. 2024. Besides, foggy conditions will prevail for a few hours in the night/morning over many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, north Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi till January 18. 

Isolated pockets of Bihar, north Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura to witness fog in the wee hours.

Delhi freezes with record-low temperature 

The national capital woke up to yet another freezing day as the minimum temperature dropped to 4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday (today). 

On Wednesday, Delhi’s Jafarpur recorded a minimum temperature of 2.7 degrees Celsius, a record low for the current season in the national capital region. Lodhi Road, Palam also saw a minimum temperature between 3-5°C.

“In Delhi and North India, we are not expecting much change in the minimum temperature. Maybe one-degree rise is likely because of the sunny skies, but foggy conditions will persist. Low cloud conditions may also continue for the neighbouring regions because of which Haryana, Punjab will see severe cold day conditions for the next two to three days.We are not expecting any sudden change in either temperature or cold conditions. The intensity of cold will gradually decrease which is a seasonal effect,”IMD Scientist Soma Sen mentioned.

Snowfall and rainfall prediction

As per IMD, jet stream winds are prevailing over the plains of North India, which will likely cause light rainfall/snowfall at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on January 17.  

Further, light to moderate rainfall in isolated places is very likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal & Sikkim, and Northeast India till January 18.
