Praise Pours in for Pakistani Female Cop Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi Who Saved Woman from Violent Mob

Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi was lauded by Pakistani celebs and netizens for saving a woman from a violent mob.

Praise is pouring in for Pakistani female cop ASP Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi who saved a woman in Lahore’s Ichra Bazar from a violent mob earlier this month. ASP Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi and a few shopkeepers shielded a woman whose life was in danger as a mob gathered around her, accusing her of hurting religious sentiments as they mistook her attire adorned with Arabic prints, as Quranic verses.

The prints read “حلوة” meaning “beautiful” and were not a Quranic verse. The video of the woman shaking with fear as the mob could be heard calling for her death, accusing her of blasphemy.

Blasphemy in Pakistan is a sensitive issue and the nation has stringent laws for blasphemous acts but irate mobs have attacked, killed and lynched members of religious minorities and Pakistani citizens and even foreigners in the name of blasphemy.

However, the woman was escorted from the shop’s premises, where she was gheraoed by the mob, by Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi and Pakistanis and celebs are elated seeing a female police officer stand up to an irate, bloodthirsty mob.

“During my service, I have handled three such incidents, and you should have trust in us [police],” she can be heard telling the mob in the clip.

Sharing a picture of her on Instagram, Pakistani actor Sajal Aly wrote: “We need more women in power”. Actor Ayesha Omar also took to social media to praise the woman: “What a hero she is. Bravo Shehrbano”.

Commending her on her bravery, Punjab police department nominated Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi for the Quaid-e-Azam police medal. “ASP Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi, the brave SDPO of [Gulberg] Lahore, put her life in danger to rescue a woman from a violent crowd. For this heroic deed, the Punjab Police has recommended her name for the prestigious Quaid-e-Azam Police Medal (QPM), the highest gallantry award for law enforcement in Pakistan,” Punjab inspector general Usman Anwar said in a statement.
