Nokia phone maker confirms HMD-branded devices including Barbie flip phone coming to India

The update was part of a release sent out to the media today announcing the launch of new Nokia G42 5G 4G/128GB variant in the country.

HMD, short for Human Mobile World Devices, or known more commonly as the Finland-based brand licensee of Nokia mobile phones (feature/smart) has confirmed that its upcoming slate of self-branded “original” devices will come to India. The roaster includes the Barbie flip phone as well which it is making in partnership with Mattel. The update was part of a release sent out to the media today announcing the launch of new Nokia G42 5G 4G/128GB variant in the country.

In the release, Ravi Kunwar, who is vice president for India and APAC at HMD Global said, “We would also want you to look forward to a great line-up of additional devices coming soon,” and while the senior executive did not share any further details, the release went on to add that “HMD is all set to launch a range of its own original devices including the upcoming Barbie Flip Phone in partnership with Mattel,” this summer, possibly coinciding with their global release.

HMD made a bunch of product-centric announcements at MWC 2024 though it did not actually show any device in person, nor did it share any information on specs and pricing.

At least two new HMD-branded smartphones are on schedule to launch in July alongside a Barbie-themed flip feature phone focused entirely on “digital detox.” The brand also tried to pacify long-time fans by reiterating that it will continue to make and sell Nokia phones and teased the return of an iconic Nokia device in May, which going by what little was shared on stage, appears to be yet another feature phone remake.

As for today’s actual announcement, HMD has launched an all-new 4GB/128GB variant of the Nokia G42 5G in India which makes owing it a bit more affordable. The Nokia G42 5G 4GB/128GB model will sell for Rs 9,999 and will go on sale from March 8, 2024.
