“Pant is doing well and he is batting and is also keeping. In the near future we (BCCI) will declare him fit,” says Shah.

Still early days but the BCCI secretary says if Pant can play the T20 World Cup, it will be a big boost to the Indian cricket team as the aggressive batter is an asset for the side.

“If he can play the T20 World Cup for us, that will be a big thing for us. He is a big asset for us,” adds Shah.

Shah, however, said that they will keep a close eye on his return to the cash-rich league and that future course of action will be decided by NCA head VVS Laxman, and the BCCI medical team headed by Nitin Patel.

“The door is open for him. Right now he has begun to keep so we are waiting. Our team is accessing his fitness,” says Shah.

Away from action for more than a year due to a road accident, IPL 2024 will be Pant’s first competitive appearance and the BCCI will be keeping a close eye on his workload in the cash-rich league. It is understood that the Indian cricket board will be deciding what he does in the league.

There are a lot of statements coming from the Delhi Capitals camp regarding playing him as a specialist batter or even an Impact Player. All those decisions, however, will be taken only if the franchise gets a green signal from the Indian cricket board.

Pant sustained plenty of injuries after the horrific car crash and had to undergo surgery on the right knee. Apart from the knee surgery, he had injured his ankle and wrist too but has recovered in time for the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League.
