Apple buys DarwinAI, a startup that can make AI systems faster and smaller

Generative AI has been the focus of many companies ever since ChatGPT was rolled out to the public. The AI tool gained immense popularity for its ability to respond to almost any question in a human-like manner.

Gradually, tech giants like Google and Microsoft also played catch-up with ChatGPT parent OpenAI and rolled out their own generative AI chatbots. A couple of months back, reports had surfaced that Meta was also planning to enter the AI race with its own chatbot.

Now, one major tech giant that has been missing from the generative AI space is Apple. The company is yet to unveil, or announce, a generative AI chatbot of its own but is actively working on the technology. Recently, there were reports that Apple has shut down its electric car project to focus on AI. And now, the company has reportedly purchased an AI startup that will help make AI systems “faster and smaller.”

Apple buys AI startup

As per a Reuters report originally attributed to Bloomberg, Apple bought the artificial intelligence (AI) startup DarwinAI and incorporated many of its employees into its own AI division. The report also adds that the acquisition would help Apple make AI systems “faster and smaller.”

The purchase of the Canadian company was completed earlier this year, although the specific financial terms were not disclosed in the report, which cited sources familiar with the situation.

As part of the acquisition, Alexander Wong, an AI researcher who played a role in DarwinAI’s development, joined Apple as a director in its AI group, the report states. Dozens of Darwin AI’s employees are also a part of Apple’s AI division now.

DarwinAI specialised in AI technology used for visually inspecting components during the manufacturing process and catered to clients across various industries.

Apple’s AI plans

Meanwhile, Apple is expected to shed more light on its AI plans soon, as was confirmed by CEO Tim Cook recently.

Two weeks back, Apple CEO Tim Cook said during a recent call that Apple will reveal more about its AI plans later this year. Not only this, he also talked about the Mac and said that there is no better computer in the market for AI than that.

In the meeting, Cook had also talked about Apple’s belief in the transformative potential of generative AI, saying that significant investments are being made in this field to unlock opportunities related to productivity and problem-solving.
