These 5 tips will help you cut down your AC bill this summer

This summer is expected to be exceptionally hot. This isn’t just our opinion; in fact, the latest report from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicates that summer 2024 may bring higher-than-normal temperatures, with an increased number of heatwave days anticipated from April to June.

The IMD forecasts that the majority of the country will face above-normal maximum temperatures, with the exception of certain areas in the east, northeast, and pockets of northwest India.

As temperatures rise, there will also be an increase in electricity bills due to the additional workload on air conditioners. This might force individuals to choose between compromising on cooling comfort or draining their pockets to cover the bill. However, what if we told you that you can actually save on your electricity bill by using your air conditioner more efficiently? Here are five tips to enhance your AC’s efficiency, maximise its cooling power, and ultimately save on the electricity bill.

1. Set the Right Temperature: A common misconception is that blasting your AC on the lowest setting will cool the room faster. But this isn’t the case – and definitely not cost-effective.  The Bureau of Energy Efficiency recommends that setting your AC to 24 degrees Celsius is more comfortable and in fact  ideal for the human body.

Here is the thing. For every degree you lower the temperature of your AC increases your electricity usage by a whopping 6 per cent. So to save on your bills, cut down on the habit of setting your AC at 16 degrees and making your room AC-powered Shimla. And aim for a range between 20-24 degrees. This will create a pleasant environment without overworking your AC, leading to better efficiency and lower energy bills.

2. Regular Filter Cleaning and Servicing: Whether you have a window AC or a split AC, the condenser unit (the part that expels heat) is usually located outdoors. Even indoor dust can find its way into the filters, clogging them over time.

These clogged filters hinder the AC’s ability to cool effectively, forcing it to work harder and consume more power. To maintain efficiency and save money, it is important to clean your AC filters regularly and schedule routine servicing, ideally at least once or twice a season.

While general servicing can be done once or twice a year, cleaning the filters due to dust and pollution is recommended monthly. Servicing can also include lubrication and addressing technical issues, so you can consult a technician to determine the optimal servicing frequency for your specific AC model.

3. Close Doors and Windows: Always make sure the windows and doors are closed. For optimal AC efficiency, it’s essential to see that the cool air of your room is not leaking or your AC will have to work harder to reach the set temperature, resulting in increased power consumption. You can even consider installing door closers that automatically shut the door behind you, ensuring cool air stays trapped inside.

4. Turn on the Fan: You fan can be your AC’s best buddy. Wondering why? Well, to enhance air circulation and fasten the cooling process in your room, simply switch on your ceiling fan. Setting it to a moderate speed will efficiently disperse the cool air throughout the space, amplifying the AC’s effectiveness and saving on the bill.

5. Use the Timer: Here’s a win-win for both your comfort and your wallet: make use of the timer function on your AC. Before bedtime, set the timer so that your AC will automatically shut off after 1 or 2 hours, once the room has reached a comfortable temperature. This will help you reduce electricity usage during the night and eliminate the need to wake up and fumble for the remote in the middle of your sleep. Similarly, avoid running the AC non-stop throughout the day. Set a timer to automatically switch it off after a specific period, giving the AC a break and preventing strain on its components.
