The epicenter was near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, approximately 45 miles west of New York City and 50 miles north of Philadelphia.

Reports of ground movement were widespread, stretching from Baltimore to the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border. Despite the widespread sensation, there were no immediate reports of significant damage.

The recent earthquake stirred memories of the August 23, 2011, quake that shook tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada. With a magnitude of 5.8, it was the most powerful earthquake to strike the East Coast since World War II. The epicenter was located in Virginia.

The 2011 earthquake caused cracks in the Washington Monument, leading to its closure for repairs, and had also prompted the evacuation of the White House and Capitol buildings.
