When Will 8th Pay Commission Be Implemented? Latest Updates Central Govt Employees Must Know

8th Pay Commission Latest News: Amid ongoing Lok Sabha elections, there is some good news for central government employees as various media reports suggest that talks about the implementation of the 8th Central Pay Commission are moving in a positive direction at the Centre. If the 8th Pay Commission is implemented, the government employees will get a good hike in their salary.

For many days now, the central government employees’ bodies have been demanding for constituting the 8th Pay Commission. In the wake of these developments, reports suggest that the new salary revision commission is likely to be set up after the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

The Indian Railways Technical Supervisors’ Association has written a letter to the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and demanded formation of a 8th Pay Commission to address several pending issues.

In the meantime, the Department of Personnel & Training (Do&PT) has forwarded this letter to the Department of Expenditure (finance ministry) for further action. Reports also suggest that the expenditure ministry, responsible for implementing the recommendations of a pay commission, is considering the demands written in the letter.

When 7th Pay Commission Was Formed?

The present 7th Pay Commission was set up in 2014 and its recommendations came into effect in 2016. Soon after the 7th Pay Commission was set up, the salaries of central government employees were increased by around 23 per cent. In general, a central pay commission is formed every 10 year, though is it not mandatory by law.

What Does Pay Commission Generally Do?

In general, the pay commission examines, reviews, recommends changes regarding the principles that should govern the emoluments’ structure including pay, allowances, and other facilities/benefits/ of central government employees and pensioners.

8th Pay Commission: What Central Govt Employees Demand?

The Indian Railways Technical Supervisors’ Association in the letter has urged the government to constitute a new central pay commission and it also wants the government to correct issues present in the salaries of many central government employees.

Moreover, the railway employees’ association also wants allocation of ample time to the pay commission in order to clear all existing anomalies concerning pay and allowances, working conditions, promotional avenues, and post classifications.

The IRTSA also urged the Centre to take along all stakeholders during this process and getting their perspectives.

After 8th Pay Commission, What Will Be Basic Salary?

As per the 7th Pay Commission recommendations, the fitment factor was kept at 2.57 times and the central government employees salary was revised on this basis. However, the media reports suggest that the fitment factor can be increased to 3.68 times in the 8th Pay Commission. In this case, the minimum salary may increase to Rs 26,000 from the existing Rs 18,000.
