In the press conference, Nirmala Sitharaman made major announcements including ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ (ONORC) scheme’. This is a part of the 20 lakh crores package to combat the liquidity crunch in the economy. Finance Minister also announced a relief of Rs 3,500 crores for those who do not have a ration card.

The scheme will allow migrant beneficiaries to access ration under Public Distribution System from any fair price shop in the country. The free ration will be given to migrants for 2 months including ones who do not have ration cards.

100 per cent national portability of rations cards will be achieved by March 2021.

Who can apply for a Ration Card?

Any person who is a bonafide citizen of India can apply for the Ration Card. Minors i.e. children below the age of 18 years are included in their parents’ card. However, an individual above 18 years of age can apply for a separate ration card.

Name the types of ration card

  • Below Poverty-Line(BPL) ration cards
  • Non-BPL

The BPL ration card is blue/yellow/green/red cards separated by colours depending upon entitlement to various subsidies on food, fuel and other goods.

The white ration cards are for people that are above the poverty line.

How to apply for a ration card?

There are separate website and link to apply for ration card which is dependent upon the state a person lives in.

Go to the website of the state you reside in and apply for the ration card.

What all documents are necessary to apply for a ration card?

  • Driving licence
  • Aadhaar card
  • Employee identity card
  • Voter ID
  • Passport
  • Any government-issued identity card
  • Health card (including the Aaragoyasri card)

What are the steps to apply for ration cards?

  • Login to the portal you have to apply on.
  • Click on the Application form
  • Fill in all your personal details.
  • After filling the details, now upload all the documents and click on the “apply online” button.

Important: If false information is provided while applying for a ration card, legal action will be taken.
