While the Haryana government introduced stricter curbs on marriages and funerals to check the spike in Covid cases, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said the partial lockdown introduced in his state has helped in breaking the chain of transmission and that virus cases in UP are on the decline.
The governments of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, and the Jammu and Kashmir administration on Sunday extended the Covid-induced curbs in their respective territories following a viral surge across the country.

Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij tweeted late on Sunday, “Mahamari Alert/ Surkshit Haryana announced from 10 May to 17 May. Stringent measures will be taken to contain spread of Corona in Haryana.”
Officials said that during this period, hotels and banquet halls will not be allowed to host weddings, which can only be held at homes with a maximum of 11 people in attendance. No more than 11 mourners will be allowed at funerals as long as the curbs are in place, they said.
Haryana on Sunday reported 13,548 Covid cases — with 2,842 and 1,991 in Gurgaon and Faridabad respectively — and 151 deaths due to Covid.
The UP government decided to extend the partial lockdown, or “closure” as it has been referred to by state officials, till 7 am on May 17 – the fourth such extension so far. The restrictions were set to be lifted on May 10.
“In connection to the government order dated May 5 of partial curfew from May 6 till 7 am of May 10, a decision has been taken on the government level that the curfew will be continued till 7 am May 17. All the conditions mentioned in the order of May 5 will be the same,” a letter issued by Additional Chief Secretary Awanish Kumar Awasthi to all concerned district and divisional officials said.
Uttar Pradesh on Sunday reported 23,333 fresh Covid cases and 296 deaths.
CM Adityanath, while meeting the ‘Team-9’ tasked with Covid management in UP, said that the partial curfew imposed in the state has given positive results and it has helped in breaking the chain of infection, a statement released by the government said.
In J&K, the administration extended the curfew in place across all 20 districts by a week. The curfew, which has been in force since April 29, will now run till May 17.
J&K reported 5,190 new Covid cases on Sunday and 54 deaths – 32 from Jammu and 22 from Kashmir.
