Assam: Total lockdown in Sonitpur from today

GUWAHATI: The deteriorating Covid-19 situation has forced the authorities in Sonitpur, which was under total containment, to impose a complete lockdown in the district.

Sonitpur deputy commissioner Bhupesh Chandra Das said all shops dealing with sale of groceries, vegetables, meat, eggs and dairy products will remain closed from Thursday 5 am.

“The administration has instead activated home delivery of all such essential items through vendors to be deputed area-wise so that the people remain indoors during the lockdown period in order to bring the Covid situation in the district under control. Circle Officers will ensure home delivery service in areas under their respective jurisdiction. The updated list of all vendors dealing in groceries, fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs and milk and other dairy products have been uploaded. The cooperation of all citizens of Sonitpur in this regard is earnestly solicited,” Das said.

The authorities had earlier allowed to run the shops selling groceries, fruits, vegetables, dairy, milk and animal fodder between 5am and 5 pm from Wednesday in the seven total containment districts of Goalpara, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Biswanath and Morigaon.

In the last 10 days, Golaghat district had 2,846 positive cases, followed by Sonitpur with 1780 cases. Jorhat reported 1703 cases during this period. Kamrup Metropolitan, which covers Guwahati city, had 1,701 cases while 1487 cases were detected in Lakimpur in the said period.

State health minister Keshab Mahanta said the police and the administration in the three districts — Morigaon, Goalpara and Kamrup—have been directed to strictly implement Covid-19 protocols and to take stringent action against lawbreakers from Thursday.
