Congress Leader Threatens To ‘Chop Off’ Tongue Of Judge Over Jail Term Order Against Rahul Gandhi

Dindigul: A Congress leader from Tamil Nadu threatened to chop off the tongue of the judge who delivered a verdict in a 2019 defamation case against Rahul Gandhi convicting him and sentencing him to two years in jail. A Surat court on March 23 held Rahul Gandhi guilty in the defamation case over his “Modi surname” remarks and sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment.

Congress leader Manikandan said that he would cut the tongue of the Surat court judge who pronounced the judgement when his party comes to power in the state.

“On March 23, the Surat court judge gave two years’ prison term for our leader Rahul Gandhi. Listen Justice H Varma, when the Congress comes to power, we will chop off your tongue. Who are you to give jail term to him?” Manikandan, party’s district head said in Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul.

A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code has been filed against the Congress leader.

Rahul Gandhi’s conviction sparks row

Last month, the former Congress chief was convicted and sentenced to two years in jail by a Magistrate’s court in the defamation case. He was later granted bail for 30 days to appeal the verdict. A day later, he was disqualified as a member of Lok Sabha under provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Gandhi’s conviction sparked a political furore with the Congress accusing the BJP government of trying to targeting the leader over his repeated attacks at Prime Minister Modi for his close links with business tycoon Gautam Adani.

On Arpil 4, Gandhi was granted bail by a sessions court in Surat in the case. The court will hear on April 13 the Congress leader’s plea seeking a stay of his conviction.

Gandhi in his appeal filed in the sessions court against his conviction said that the order was “erroneous and patently perverse” and that he was sentenced in a manner so as to attract disqualification as a Member of Parliament
