PAN-Aadhaar linking: Want to check if your PAN is operative or not? Follow these simple steps using Form 26AS

With the deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar expiring on June 30, 2023, the government hasn’t issued any extension for this procedure. Hence, from July 1, 2023, your PAN will become inoperative if you haven’t linked it with your Aadhaar.

However, one can still link PAN to Aadhaar by making a payment of Rs 1,000 through the e-filing portal. If one has failed to link PAN with Aadhaar and needs to check whether the PAN is operative, Form 26AS is one of the methods.

So, how to check whether your PAN is operative or not using Form 26AS?

Step 1:Login Income tax portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/

Step 2: Click on Income Tax Returns under e File Tab

Step 3:From the list, click on View Form 26 AS.

Step 4: Confirm on the Disclaimer and mark tick box and click on Proceed.

Step 5: Under Current Status of PAN, you can see if your PAN is Active and operative.

If the PAN is shown to be inoperative, it can be made operative again, upon intimation of Aadhaar to the prescribed authority after payment of fee of Rs 1,000.

A PIB release dated March 28, 2023 stated, “The PAN can be made operative again in 30 days, upon intimation of Aadhaar to the prescribed authority after payment of Rs 1,000.”

How to check in PAN is valid or invalid?Step 1: Go to e-Filing portal homepage.

Step 2: Click on Verify Your PAN on the e-filing homepage.

Step 3: On the Verify Your PAN Page, enter your PAN, Full Name, Date of Birth and Mobile Number (accessible to you) and click Continue.

Step 4: On the verification page, enter the 6-digit OTP received on the mobile number entered in Step 3 and validate.

From July 1, 2023, in case of non-linked PAN,

  • No refund shall be made against such PANs.
  • Interest shall not be payable on such refund for the period during which PAN remains inoperative
  • TDS and TCS shall be deducted/collected at higher rate, as provided in the Act.
