Stock market holiday: Are NSE, BSE closed on October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti? Check here

Stock market holiday on October 2: On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on Monday, both the bourses in India will observe a trading holiday. On October 2, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will pause their bustling activities in the equity, equity derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments.

The currency derivatives segments will also remain closed, as will be the case with the commodity derivatives segment and electronic gold receipts (EGR) segment.

With the bourses closed on October 2, the first week of the month will only see four trading days from October 3 through October 6.

Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti marks the first trading holiday in the month of October. The only other holiday this month (barring the weekly Saturday and Sunday offs) will be on October 24 for Dussehra. The exchange may alter that holiday by giving a notice or circular in advance.

On the previous trading day, September 29, the benchmark Sensex jumped by 320.09 points (0.49 per cent) to settle at 65,828.41, while Nifty advanced 114.75 points or 0.59 per cent and closed above the 19,600 mark. The price action came after value-buying in metal, financial, and energy stocks on Friday. The upward movement was also supported by positive trends in the US and European markets, PTI reported.

Among the Sensex firms, NTPC climbed over 3 per cent emerging as the biggest gainer. Tata Motors, Sun Pharma, Tata Steel, State Bank of India, UltraTech Cement, JSW Steel, Bajaj Finance, Reliance, ICICI Bank and IndusInd Bank were the other major gainers.

According to PTI, Power Grid, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and Titan were among the laggards.
