Storm brewing over Arabian Sea, may turn into cyclone: Weather alert

If it intensifies, this will be the first post-Monsoon cyclone in the Arabian Sea.

The cyclonic circulation over the Lakshadweep area and the adjoining south-east Arabian Sea and Kerala coast moved west-north-westwards and lay over the south-east Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the south-east and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea during the next 48 hours, the IMD said in a statement.

The officials said that the weather system is likely to move further west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the central Arabian Sea around October 21.

The potential intensity of the cyclone has not been determined by the officials. IMD said that they are closely observing the development.

Warmer ocean temperatures make the period between October and December favorable for the development of cyclonic circulations in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. However, there were no tropical storms in the Arabian Sea during the post-monsoon season in 2022, whereas the Bay of Bengal saw two tropical storms, Sitrang and Mandous.

If the tropical storms forming in the Indian Seas develop into cyclones, they will be named ‘Tej,’ according to the naming formula followed for cyclones in the Indian Ocean region.
