Google Workspace users can now make ‘cloud-encrypted 1:1 video calls’ to other users through the Meet mobile app. Here’s what we know.
Google will now allow its Workspace users to make direct 1:1 calls moving forward. Until now, Workspace users had to create a meeting link ahead of the actual meeting, which was then shared as a calendar invite through email or chat. But now, users can make ‘cloud-encrypted 1:1 video calls’ to other users through the Meet mobile app.

“Now you can place a Meet call on your mobile app directly to a colleague, ringing their mobile device,” Google said in the update blog post. In that call itself, Workspace users will have access to Meet features, including in-meeting chat, virtual backgrounds, visual effects, live closed captions, and others, depending on the edition of the Workspace you have.
Google further said that this functionality would be on by default and “can only be turned OFF by turning off Meet meetings and calls for your organization.”
It is also worth noting that Meet calls won’t feature ‘legacy calling features’ present in Google Duo, such as group calls, messages, moments, family mode, and knock knock. However, these features will still be available for users who don’t update to the new version of the app.
When Is It Rolling Out, Availability
Google says that this update will be available for all Workspace users. It has already begun for iOS users on November 2 and will start for Android users from November 14 onwards. Moreover, this is said to be an “extended rollout,” meaning it may take up to 15 days for the feature to be visible.
