Iron Deficiency Is Common In Women: Symptoms And Prevention

When there is not enough iron in the food or excessive blood is leaving the body, then this condition can occur.

Over 1.62 billion individuals worldwide, representing a diverse range of racial and ethnic backgrounds, suffer from iron deficiency anaemia. For this reason, it’s critical that everyone ensures they consume an adequate amount of iron through food. Iron deficiency anaemia is caused by inadequate iron, as the name suggests. Your body cannot make enough haemoglobin, a substance that gives red blood cells the ability to carry oxygen, if it does not receive enough iron. Consequently, iron deficiency anaemia may cause fatigue and dyspnea. Do you know why women are more susceptible to this condition than men? According to the Mayo Clinic, when there is not enough iron in the food or excessive blood is leaving the body, then this condition can occur. Since menstruating women lose a significant amount of blood every month, they are more prone to this. Pregnant women, especially, need to consume three times more iron in their diets than men.

Iron deficiency is, however, substantially more likely in cases of extreme blood loss such as frequent blood donation, low-bioavailability diets, and the difficulties associated with pregnancy.

Signs of iron deficiency:

Too much fatigue and weakness – When there is a deficiency of haemoglobin in women’s body, symptoms like weakness and fatigue are common. This happens because oxygen does not reach every organ. Due to this, the nerves start to relax, resulting in weakness and fatigue.

Loss of appetite- Due to iron deficiency, women lose appetite. The stomach always feels like it’s full. Since there is already weakness and fatigue, if nutrients are not obtained from food, problems increase further.

Headache and dizziness- Women who suffer from iron deficiency always complain of headache and dizziness. This causes irritation throughout the day.

Change in skin colour – Due to lack of haemoglobin in the body, the skin starts turning yellow. Nails start becoming very weak. Hands and feet become very cold.

Chest pain- Due to deficiency of haemoglobin, breathing becomes fast. The reason for this is that the heart does not get sufficient oxygen supply, hence sometimes one starts feeling short of breath. This can also cause chest pain too.

Eat meat, fish, dry fruits, and other non-vegetarian foods if you have an iron deficit. Vegetarian people should eat dry fruits, bananas, and dark green leafy vegetables like spinach. Fruits that quickly make up for an iron shortage include raisins, apricots, peas, cauliflower, grapefruit, orange, watermelon, strawberry, pomegranate, etc.
